Thank you for your interest in participating in the pilot workshops of the #WhatDoYouExpect project

Introduction

The Gold Coast Centre Against Sexual Violence has developed the initiative #WhatDoYouExpect to address the rising incidences of sexual violence and digital abuse for Australian adolescents. It builds on the successful earlier work which provided a web portal for young people to access accurate and non-judgemental information about the cross-section between media and developing sexual identity. Moving forward the project integrates the technology itself to encourage active participation around sensitive, and potentially embarrassing or triggering, discussion topics.

Purpose of the pilot workshops

The pilot workshops are being run with an older cohort to enable testing of the materials and meaningful feedback on the suitability, relevance and appropriateness of the discussions for a younger audience. Participants in the pilot workshops will fully participate in the program and therefore will be required to challenge their own attitudes and values around sexuality and media. Data collection will also occur in the workshops.

Who can participate in the pilot workshops?

The pilot workshops are open to anyone who is aged between 15-20 years old.

Discomforts and Risks

The workshops will involve discussions of sexuality, gender and consent. Given the nature of these topics there are some risks associated with discomfort and psychological distress. Feelings of sadness, fear or confusion may arise. Facilitation staff will be available at the end of workshops for discussion, and information for support services will be provided to all participants. You are free to withdraw from the workshop at any time.

Benefits of participation

There is no promise you will receive any benefit from this study. Participation may provide an opportunity to learn about sexuality and self representation leading to a greater understanding of the influence media has on our experiences of sexuality.

Statement of privacy

Your name will not be used in any data collection, analysis or reporting associated with this pilot study. All information will be collected anonymously by the ActiveExpressions Software. The results from this pilot will aggregate findings across the sample and will not link specific answers to individuals.

The completed consent form will be stored in a password protected folder and destroyed after the legislated period.

As an incentive for participating in this pilot workshop you will receive a Coles Myer Voucher to the value of $25 as well as refreshments of food and drink provided on the day.
